So I talk a lot about how much I love summer. I loooooooove summer. I love the sun and the warmth and wearing sandals and shorts and dresses. I love sauntering around downtown watching the crowds and drinking beer on restaurant patios. But I think the thing I love most of all is the food. No more mealy apples and rock hard, flavourless tomatoes. Summer brings a revelation. Hoards of fresh zucchini and cucumbers and beans, plus all those herbs bursting out of my garden. Love it.
Sometimes all this deliciousness makes its way into my cocktails. Here's a recent discovery: vodka + watermelon.
For one cocktail, muddle several mint leaves in a glass with half an ounce of simple syrup (I removed the mint at this point, but it's good with or without it). Then add two ounces of vodka, a half ounce of lemon juice, and four ounces of watermelon juice. For the watermelon juice, I whirled a bunch of watermelon chunks in a food processor, then put it all through a strainer. I can't claim to have created this awesomeness all on my own, I adapted it from a recipe at Fine Cooking.
Summery, fresh and boozy. Perfect way to enjoy more of the summer...
